UNGA: Shettima leaves Abuja for New York

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for New York to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which begins on Monday, September 22, and runs until Sunday, September 28.

The announcement was made in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), who said Shettima would stand in for the President at the week-long event.
According to Nkwocha, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the high-level general debates of the Assembly and take part in several sideline engagements.
“The Vice President, representing His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the global event and join other dignitaries at the UN high-level general debates, among other side events,” Nkwocha said.
He added that Shettima will use the platform to highlight Nigeria’s climate policy direction.

“The Vice President will announce Nigeria’s new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement at this year’s UN special event on climate,” the presidential aide noted.
The General Assembly will also commemorate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, with global leaders expected to outline commitments to multilateralism, peace, security, and development.
Nkwocha did not disclose the specific day Shettima would make Nigeria’s address but stressed that the visit reflects the Tinubu administration’s focus on engaging international partners on pressing global and domestic challenges.
