UNICEF warns over 1billion people use polluted water

•Contributed N220million to assist Kebbi water-saving culture
The Chief of Field of the United Nations Children Fund (UINCEF), Mr Amose Kudzala, has disclosed that over one billion people globally drink contaminated water.

Kudzala made this known in an address yesterday at the 2017 Zonal Media Breakfast on World Water Day in Enugu.

He said these vulnerable people were exposed to water polluted with feaces great health challenges.

He explained that access to clean water and sanitation was a prerequisite for healthy human living because they had direct impact on the wellbeing of the people all over the world.

He stressed that the necessity of healthy drinking water made it important for its being recycled for use after it had passed through a series of treatment processes.

UNICEF’s Communication Officer, Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, said the media need accurate information on the activities of the organisation to champion the advocacy for improved safe water.

According to the Managing Director of Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (ENRUWASSA) Dr. Frank Okenwa Omeje, waste water from home, cities, industries and agriculture flows back to nature to pollute it.

He said: “There are over 66.3 million people living without safe water supply close to their homes, who spend countless hours queuing or trekking long distances to get it, with the associated health impacts.”
