We’re not part of ASUU strike – CONUA

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has clarified that it is not part of the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

It urged its members across Nigerian universities to continue their academic and administrative duties without disruption, even as it sought protection for its members from the Vice-Chancellors of universities.

In a statement signed on Sunday by its National President, Comrade ‘Niyi Sunmonu‘, CONUA said the clarification became necessary following “recent misinformation” circulating on social media and other platforms, which had caused confusion among students and members of the academic community.

“CONUA has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” Sunmonu said. “This clarification is therefore issued to set the record straight.”

The union reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining academic stability, excellence, and constructive engagement with the government and stakeholders in the higher education sector.

It urged its members to remain steadfast by continuing their teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities diligently, emphasising that such dedication was vital to sustaining the integrity of Nigeria’s universities.

CONUA explained that it currently has no reason to declare a dispute or embark on a strike. The union recalled that when the Federal Government inaugurated the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement in October 2024, it was “conspicuously and deliberately omitted.”
It said that following a formal protest, the union met with the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on September 11, 2025, where he acknowledged CONUA’s concerns and assured that the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee would be expanded to include all academic unions in federal tertiary institutions.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Education has since fulfilled that promise by expanding the committee.

“We are pleased to note that the Ministry of Education has recently expanded the committee, fulfilling that promise.

Until CONUA is formally brought to the table and any of the issues it has presented to the Federal Government become subjects of dispute, there is no foundation whatsoever for any strike action by CONUA,” the statement reads.

The union called on Vice-Chancellors to ensure the safety and protection of its members as they continue their legitimate duties within their respective institutions.

“We equally encourage students to remain focused on their academic pursuits without fear of interruption. The union stands by its commitment to quality education, national development, and peaceful industrial relations in the university system,” the statement added.
