Women group to aid rape victims, single mothers

Concerned by rising cases of rape and travails of single mothers, a women group in the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN), under the aegis of Women’s Guild, has offered to train victims in skills acquisition for self-reliance.

The Desk Coordinator of the group in charge of Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger Republic and Canada, Rev. Mrs. Ulari Emmanuel–Ogbonna, in an interview with The Guardian in Owerri, at the weekend, said the guild was worried by the plight of women, adding that self-reliance was the way forward.

Ogbonna said the group has engaged the services of a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Nehemiah Initiative, to train women on chosen skills for self reliance and employment, rather than leaving them to their husbands and others for survival.

She said the training, which has begun in Enugu, would assist the women morally and financially to overcome poverty and inhuman treatment.

Some of the skills, according to her, include classes on hat making and production of disinfectants, perfumes, and soap among others.
