Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has begun building the first rail network in the North, with 12 designated terminals in the Maiduguri metropolis.

According to him, the terminals would link major markets, schools, public places and other viable economic areas.

The Commissioner of Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Buba, disclosed this yesterday in Maiduguri while inspecting the prototype.

He said: “The inspection of the rail project sites was to complete the feasibility studies, environmental risk assessment (ERA), as well as community consultations to ensure the successful implementation of the railway project.”

Buba stated that the terminals would ease commuting and haulage of farm produce and other household products to markets at lower costs.

Besides commuting and haulage of goods, the commissioner noted that the rail network would revive the local economy, by creating more jobs through re-engineering of the transportation network of Maiduguri.

Speaking on the innovative intra-city rail project, Buba added: “Zulum’s rail network in the state will not only be   cost-effective, but energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.”
Reiterating the economic importance of the project, Buba explained that its completion would support other transport infrastructural projects, including the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East-West and South ring roads.

He clarified: “The three ring roads are to link Auno, Molai, Polo, and Shagari low-cost communities in Maiduguri.”
