The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condoled with the family of 19-year-old Nigerian student, Fadlullah Agboluaje, who died in Ukraine on January 9, 2022.

Agboluaje had arrived in Ukraine on January 8 and was reported dead a day later. Reports say he died from extreme cold in his hostel room at the Lviv Polytechnic National University.

Dabiri-Erewa, who visited the Agboluaje family in Ebute Metta, Lagos, described the death of Agboluaje as unfortunate and avoidable.

The visit was filled with emotions and grief as the Agboluaje family blamed the school for negligence, in particular the liaison officer who received Fadlullah.

Dabiri-Erewa told the family, represented by Mrs. Musleemah Agboluaje and her two daughters, of the immediate intervention of the country’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Fatai Alege, who, with the consent of the father, immediately demanded an autopsy.

According to her, the Nigerian envoy had given all necessary preliminary assistance, pledging that the Nigerian government will work with the family on the next steps to take on the issue of alleged negligence by the institution.

Mrs. Agboluaje narrated how she had been in constant communication with her son till 11:00 p.m., where he had complained of the non- functional heater in his room and requested that it be fixed but got no response from the receptionist on duty.

He had also sent his mother pictures of the room, which was in a most deplorable state.

MEANWHILE, preliminary autopsy report indicates that Agboluaje died of pneumonia due to effect of extreme cold weather in Ukraine.
