Nigeria begins paying withheld salaries to ASUU lecturers

The Federal Government has begun paying the withheld salaries of academics under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The salaries were withheld during an eight-month strike by ASUU in 2022, when the previous administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, implemented a “No Work, No Pay” policy.

Several academics, including the chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, confirmed the commencement of payments to reporters.

The payment follows President Bola Tinubu’s October 2023 approval to release four of the eight months’ worth of withheld salaries.

The government has also increased university workers’ salaries by 35% and granted autonomy to universities by removing them from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System.
