Nigeria’s U-20 national team, Flying Eagles, will take on their Ugandan counterpart in the football event of the ongoing African Games, which begins officially today.
Nigeria last won the African Games men’s football gold medal 51 years ago when the country hosted the event in 1973, but coach Ladan Bosso said his boys were ready to take the ultimate medal in this edition.
Billed for the Accra Stadium, it is Group B’s opening game and both Bosso and his Ugandan counterpart, Morley Ochama, said they were ready to start with victory.
Speaking at the pre-match conference, yesterday, Bosso said: “We have prepared a lot for this competition. The players are disciplined and ready for the action. We are not only counting on the talents of the players but also the support of the Nigerians living here in Ghana to encourage and support the boys.”
Ochama said today’s game would announce Uganda’s arrival in the competition. He said his team is prepared and eager to compete against the Nigerian giants.
“We do respect Nigerians as superpowers of African football, but we don’t fear them. A lot has changed since they beat us the last time, and we are ready to show them we have improved since then.”
Apart from Nigeria and Uganda, other teams in Group B are South Sudan, Senegal and Tunisia.
In Group A are hosts, Ghana, The Gambia, Benin and Congo.
