Nigeria police lifts ban on car tinted glass, imposes strict permit

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Thursday announced the lifting of the ban on tinted glass permits implemented in June 2022.

The ban was previously initiated due to widespread concerns regarding the role of tinted glass in aiding heinous crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, the illegal transportation of firearms and human trafficking.

Police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement, said the reintroduction will be accompanied by stringent measures to ensure strict compliance.

Adejobi said police ICT Analysts and enforcement officers nationwide will undergo a training scheduled for Thursday, February, 29 lead-in to the reopening of tinted glass permit issuance.

“The training will equip ICT Analysts and Enforcement Officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to regulate the registration process, guide registrants on the use of the portal where required, attend to complaints from members of the public, and enforce compliance effectively,” Adejobi said.

Adejobi added that the new permits will incorporate security features, including QR codes for real-time verification, unique serial numbers linked to vehicle and owner details, and digital holograms to combat counterfeiting.

“It is crucial to highlight that the guidelines for the issuance of tinted permits and the use of tinted glass will strictly adhere to the provisions of the motor vehicles (prohibition of tinted glass) act 1991 and other relevant extant laws,” he said.
