Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, is edging closer to completing a summer transfer from Ajax Amsterdam of Holland to Fulham.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Bassey remains Fulham’s priority signing as a new left-footed center-back after the agreement reached with Ajax on Friday.

“Understand Fulham have decided to go for just one left-footed CB between Calvin Bassey and Mohammed Salisu despite talks for both,” Romano tweeted.

“Expectation is for only one deal to be done between Bassey and Salisu and Bassey is the fav option.

“Negotiations are very advanced with Bassey as club is now hoping for medical tests this week.”

Bassey looks set to join Fulham for a fee in the region of £18million (€21m) after the Premier League club reached a full agreement with Ajax.

The Athletic reported last week that Fulham had made an initial offer in writing of around £15m ($19.3m) for Bassey but the two clubs have now settled on an increased sum plus a sell-on fee.

The deal remains subject to personal terms being agreed. Bassey is expected to have his medical at Craven Cottage and finalise personal terms with Fulham in the coming days.

Bassey who has four years left on his current contract at Ajax whom he joined for a fee of €23m from Rangers last summer had also attracted interest from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Nigerian international since joining Ajax has made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing five further assists for the Dutch Eredivisie side.

Bassey who made his Nigeria debut in March 2022 and has made ten appearances for his country won the league title with Rangers in 2021 and the Scottish Cup the following season.
