The one-day Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, Enioluwa Adesina, and his two deputies, Flourish Chinedu Nwachukwu (DVC 1) and Rachel Oladehinde (DVC 2), yesterday, said Nigerian youths have the potentials to compete with any set of younger generations across the globe provided the enabling opportunity are there for them to excel.

The trio, while addressing the media during their one-day official duties, said it was a misconception to say that Nigerian youths are lazy, or that they cannot excel in education compared to the older generation.

“I don’t share the idea that Nigerian youths are lazy. Nothing has justified such a misconception. Provided the enabling environment is given, Nigerian youths remain the best, most talented and promising younger generation across the globe,” he said.

Adesina said that on several occasions when Nigerian youths had the opportunity to mingle with their counterparts from other nations, the outcome of such meetings do not always justify the notion that we are a lazy set of younger generations. It is interesting to know that despite the challenges surrounding them, the younger generations in this nation still excel in several areas of endeavour.”

The one-day Bowen VC, a 400-level Law student, therefore, appealed to the government at all levels, stakeholders and critical institutions to ensure that the best opportunities and environment are provided for youths in the country to excel.

Adesina and his deputies also said that though indecent dressing had become an issue that must be corrected, “the major onus lies on whoever is dressing indecently to realise the physical and spiritual implications of their actions and not necessarily push the blame to the society and or government. One thing about Bowen University is that if you are a product of this institution, part of the discipline is upright dressing and morals.”

The two Deputy VCs, while corroborating the message titled: ‘Indecent Dressing’ delivered by the institution’s Chaplain, Revd (Dr) Gideon Akanbi, said it is imperative for youths, especially the ladies, to avoid indecent dressing for the sake of their future.

According to them, “while parents would play their parts, the major responsibility lies with individuals to determine what they wanted and how they wished to be addressed or perceived in the society.”

The trio, however, harped on cleanliness and appropriate waste management, saying that one of the factors that portray the image of a nation is appropriate waste management and cleanliness.

They, therefore, urged the school management to ensure that more waste bins are provided within the institution’s premises while also urging the students to eschew the idea of throwing or dropping their wastes indiscriminately within the compound.

They also said that a work-study initiative would soon take off in the school.

Other principal officers of the institution are the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jonathan O. Babalola, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatosin E. Atobatele, Registrar, Mr. Babatunde T. Adetona, University Bursar, Mr. Babatunde O. Kolawole and University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs) Aderonke Otunla.
