Bayelsa to reduce working hours for civil servants

No street protest was held yesterday in Enugu State by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other affiliated unions over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity and hardship in the country.

The workers had planned to march on the streets of Enugu State in line with the directives from the national leadership of the unions before delivering their message to Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House.

However, members of the unions, who had gathered as early as 7:00 a.m. for the protest march, could not move beyond their secretariat, following an advice from the state Police Command against street march. The police had warned that they would not guarantee the security of the workers beyond their secretariat if tey did otherwise.

MEANWHILE, Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has said that his administration is working towards cushioning the effects of the prevailing economic hardship in the country on state workers.

Diri stated this, yesterday, while addressing the chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, Barnabas Simon, who led members on a nationwide protest to Government House, Yenagoa.

The governor assured that he would meet with the state’s Head of Service and the NLC Chairman to discuss modalities towards reducing the working hours of civil servants in the state to mitigate their plight.
