The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) have raised concern over the detention of an Abuja-based journalist, Nelson Omonu.
Omonu, who works for Summit Post online, was whisked away on New Year day by security operatives.
He was reportedly taken to Katsina in the most inhuman manner without prior invitation.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Emmanuel Ogbeche, and Secretary, Ochiaka Ugwu, NUJ FCT Council said if anybody feels maligned or defamed, he should approach a court of competent jurisdiction for redress.
Similarly, DICAN, in a statement by its chairman, Amadin Uyi, expressed extreme disappointment at the conduct of the security operatives who were used to perpetrate the act.
DICAN condemned the action purportedly by the state government, lamenting that the only crime its member committed was practising journalist in Nigeria.
With the disappearance and eventual murder, last year, of Tordue Salem, a journalist with Vanguard newspaper, the association expressed fear for the life of Omonu, and demanded his unconditional release.
