Oba of Benin receives EU observers, warns Nigerians against violence

Benin monarch, Ewuare II, yesterday, cautioned politicians and other stakeholders against violence. Recall that presidential and National Assembly elections held nationwide on Saturday.

The warning by the monarch was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Oba of Benin, Iguobaro Osaigbovo. Ewuare II gave the advice, when a delegation of European Union Mission Long Term Observers Monitoring the elections paid him a courtesy visit in his palace in Benin City.

The monarch said: ‘There is no point shedding blood or getting involved in thuggery, acts of impunity and other outrageous activities.”

He urged the electorate, politicians and other stakeholders in the election to be well behaved, pointing out that the Benin throne had being praying and working hard for peaceful polls in Nigeria.

He said: “We are expecting politicians and the electorate to be well behaved. We pray the elections will be peaceful. We have being praying and working hard for peaceful elections. There is no point shedding blood.”

Earlier, the observers Team Lead, Jeroen De Vries, who appreciated the Oba for receiving the delegation in his palace, said the team was in Nigeria on the invitation of Federal Government to assess the conduct of the elections.

He also expressed optimism that the outcome of the elections will bring in prosperity to Nigerian citizens. Two other members of the European Union, Mashu Poulsen and enyeneabasi Chuks, accompanied Jeroen.
