Governor Godwin Obaseki and the people of Edo State, on Thursday, rolled out the red carpet for players and officials of Edo Queens for their victory at the just concluded Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six contest in Bayelsa State.


The homecoming reception for Edo Queens was in fulfillment of Governor Obaseki’s promises to reward hard work and excellence, geared towards making the state great again in all spheres.

The reception began at the Western Boys High School on Ikpoba Hill, with the First Lady of Edo State Dr. Mrs Betsy Obaseki and the Executive Chairman of Edo state Sports Commission, Olympian Yussuf Alli, were on ground to welcome the champions.

A roadshow followed through some major roads, including Akpakpava Road through the King Square, Stadium Road, Akenzua and Airport Road to Government House in GRA where Governor Obaseki personally received the team amid cheers.

Obaseki said he was elated and fulfilled by the historic achievement of Edo Queens winning the number one position in the women league in Nigeria. He immediately announced a N1million reward for each player in the 40-man team, N5m for the coaches and another N5m for the rest team officials.

The Supporters club was not left out in the largesse as Obaseki doled out the sum of N2.5m to them. Obaseki charged Edo Queens to remain focused and develop winning mentality as real champions, just as he urged them to work towards retaining the title next year while assuring them that the next administration will continue with the support.

Meanwhile, Obaseki has heaped praises on the Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, Yussuf Alli, describing him as a decent and trustworthy sports administrator with a proven strong character of financial discipline.

“I don’t waste time in giving approvals to his memos and request because I know he is not going to steal the money. And I will always consider his request promptly because I trust him,” Obaseki said.
