Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Command, has through its anti-smuggling activities, seized goods worth N335.9 million from smugglers, and also realised over N34.2 million as revenue disbursed into the Federation Account.

The Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Bamidele Makinde, showcased the seizures while briefing newsmen at the Command Headquarters, Idiroko.

According to the Commandant, operatives intercepted luxury buses along with others from the desperate economic saboteurs operating at the border corridor.

“The Command Operatives who are not ready to allow illegal trade to thrive wielded their big stick against the unscrupulous traders engaged in illicit trade during the period under review and were able to make the seizures.

“For example, our vigilant officers and men made a seizure of three foreign used luxury buses smuggled into the country through Ohumbe border on May 15, 2023.

“Two Toyota Hiace buses of 2022 model, with chassis number JTHN9CPOP6018610 and JTGHN9CP7P6019835 were also seized by our gallant officers, in a bush path between Sawojo and Imasayi communities, on Monday, May 29, 2023.

“Other seizures made possible include: 6,924 bags of smuggled rice of 50kg each, equivalent to 11 trailer loads; Premium Motor Spirit (PMS); used tyres; Cannabis sativa; and other prohibited items. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seizures is N335,855,989.00 million.”

Makinde added: “The seizures were made with strategic deployment of intelligence across the state.”

“The seized secondhand clothes were as a result of inter-agency collaboration. Let me use this forum to thank our sister security agencies for their maximum co-operation and quick response.

“We have been able to achieve this great feat with their cooperation and team work.

“Our mandates in the state include revenue generation, suppression of smuggling and trade facilitation.”

He commended the efforts of the officers and commitment in delivery of their services and thanked traditional rulers, community leaders, and the youth for their continuous support.”
