Olukoya backs 3rd edition of Orin Tuntun

The African Art Music Commissioning Project (AAMCP), a subsidiary of Àkójopò, has announce its 3rd Annual Concert in Lagos, Orin Tuntun, celebrating new African art music.

This year’s event which promises to captivate audiences with its grandeur, expanding horizons and celebrating the rich diversity of African Art Music is backed by founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries, Dr. D.K. Olukoya. The concert which will take place on July 22, 2023, will showcase a remarkable lineup of commissioned compositions from esteemed composers around the world.

Building on the resounding success of its previous editions, Àkójopò is proud to launch the AAMCP in collaboration with renowned composers and experts in African Art Music. Drs. Ayo Oluranti (Goethe-Institute), Charles Lwanga (University of Michigan), and Branco Sekalegga (Makerere University) have lent their expertise to shape this ambitious project. The project seeks to promote research-oriented works with a theoretical underpinning, explicitly using elements (sonic, structural, and stylistic), which are germane to Africa.

Dr. Olukoya, a visionary philanthropist and an advocate for the arts, while speaking on his vision for youth empowerment through art music, said “Music is a powerful tool of profitable engagement, motivation, teamwork and training in leadership skills for the youths.”

Speaking on the event, Ayo Oluranti (Ph.D.) says, “This is perhaps a global first commissioning composers, selected through a blind process, to write scholarly art music that utilises researched materials, resources and processes unearthed from the vast landscape of traditional music in Africa. It was indeed a great experience having the commissioned composers rob minds together with Charles Lwanga (Ph.D).
