Ondo State government has reiterated its commitment to partner relevant stakeholders in finding lasting solution to the sea surge ravaging Aiyetoro community and other affected areas in Ilaje council of the state.
The Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, stated this last week at the formal handing over of relief materials to victims of the Aiyetoro ocean surge in Igbokoda, the local government headquarter.
The relief items distributed include, mattresses, bedsheets, roofing sheets, groundnut oil, provisions, foodstuffs, bags of cement and other items to alleviate the pains of victims in the Aiyetoro community.
Aiyedatiwa disclosed that the World Bank had been involved to fund construction works in Aiyetoro community, adding that the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) would carry it out.
He, however, noted that it might not be easy for victims to regain all that was lost in the unfortunate incident, saying: “The trend cannot continue, it must be stopped. Giving out palliatives can only mitigate your pains for a short while.
He assured that the relief materials would go a long way to mitigate the effect on the people while the government is working on a lasting solution to the ocean surge with utmost urgency.
“We have alerted relevant stakeholders like the Federal Ministry of Environment, World Bank and ecological experts on the plight of Aiyetoro people.
NEMA Director-General, Muhammadu Muhammed, said the agency was willing to sustain its synergy with Ondo State Government to explore long-term solutions to such natural disasters.
Muhammed, who was represented by the Ekiti/Ondo Head of Operations, Olusegun Afolayan, sought disaster risk management and robust collaboration by stakeholders at all levels.
Responding on behalf of beneficiaries, Chief Iwasanmi Ajijo, lauded the state government for bringing succour to the people in such a critical time, pledging that the materials would be put to good use.
