Governor Dauda Lawal has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Zamfara State’s healthcare sector with the launch of a 200-bed hospital in Talata Mafara. The hospital will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, aiming to address long-standing infrastructure deficits and provide advanced healthcare services to the expanding commercial town.
During the inauguration ceremony, which took place over the weekend, Governor Lawal expressed concern over the neglect of Talata Mafara General Hospital by previous administrations. He emphasised that the hospital lacked essential medical equipment and faced significant infrastructure decay. This prompted his administration to prioritise the hospital’s complete reconstruction.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Lawal highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “Our administration has prioritised the revitalisation of decaying infrastructure as a critical pillar of our transformational agenda. We have placed education and healthcare at the forefront, recognising their essential roles in societal development.”
The hospital will feature a wide range of facilities, including a paediatrics ward, male and female medical wards, surgical units, an intensive care unit (ICU), an Accident and Emergency (A&E) department, a theatre, a dental lab, and advanced diagnostic equipment such as X-ray and mammogram units. In addition, it will house a pharmacy, consulting rooms, labour rooms, a restaurant, and on-call rooms for doctors.
Governor Lawal assured that the hospital would be completed within six months, adding, “This is just one of many facilities being constructed to provide a conducive environment for delivering quality healthcare services.”
Former Governor of old Sokoto State, Yahaya Abdulkarim, who was the special guest at the event, praised Lawal’s focus on the healthcare sector.
He noted, “I was amazed when the governor informed me that all advanced equipment had already been procured for the general hospital. This is a laudable effort.”
The 200-bed hospital in Talata Mafara is expected to serve as a critical link between primary healthcare facilities and tertiary institutions, bolstering healthcare delivery in the region.
