Oyo attorney-general urges youth involvement in dispute resolution

Oyo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, has called on the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) to actively engage the youths in resolving disputes. He said this during the inauguration ceremony of the patrons at the Mediation Centre, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Aikomo emphasised the importance of involving younger demographics, stating that mediation skills are essential, particularly for the majority in society aged in their 30’s, 20’s, and 40’s. 

He stated that the inevitability of conflicts and the need for a collaborative effort from the government, communities, and religious bodies to promote peaceful coexistence.

Aikomo expressed concern over the older age representation within the association of mediators, stressing the significance of skilled young individuals in delivering effective mediation services. 

The Chairman of ICMC, Adeyemi Opakunle, lamented the challenges mediators face in establishing their professional existence independently.  Also, the Director of Oyo State Mediation Centre, Dr. Titilayo Dairo, advised youths to understand their potential partners before making relationship decisions. She emphasised that the center focus on mediating cases, creating awareness about dispute settlement, and addressing issues such as family-based conflicts and gender-based violence.
