Oyo PDP members defect to APC ahead of guber contest

Ahead of the March 11 governorship contest, some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Oyo State have declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Sen. Teslim Folarin.

Under their platform, PDP Vanguard, the defectors, through their official Twitter account, @pdpvanguard, on Wednesday, disclosed that their support for Folarin was due to their party’s poor performance in the presidential and national Assembly polls.

In the February 25 presidential and National Assembly polls, PDP, which is the ruling party, lost the three senatorial seats and managed to win five of the 14 House of Representatives seats, conceding the remaining to APC.

The Guardian gathered that most Oyo PDP members were aggrieved over the alleged agreement Governor Seyi Makinde entered into with the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, that the governor should support APC in the presidential poll for reciprocity on March 11 to earn him re-election.

MEANWHILE, APC has told PDP mambers, who still believe there was agreement between Tinubu and Makinde, to desist from making false claims about having the endorsement of Tinubu.

In a statement, Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, debunked claims that Makinde played a key role in Tinubu’s victory in the state.

Folarin, through his media aide, Yekini Olaniyi, called on other opposition parties to take cue from the PDP Vanguard by joining him to rescue Oyo from the maladministration of Makinde.

PDP stalwart and former deputy governor of Oyo, Azeem Gbolarumi, said it was too premature to speak since the party was still holding crucial meetings.

Spokesman of PDP in Oyo, Akeem Olatunji, could not be reached for comments.
