The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State conducted its ward and council congresses on Tuesday and Thursday respectively, despite a boycott by a faction of the party led by its governorship candidate in the November 16, 2013 gubernatorial election, Tony Nwoye.

The climax will be election of the state executives of the party as the ward and council delegates gather today in Awka. The members galvanised to elect executives to run the affairs of the party in the next three years despite earlier threats of violence, boycott and disruptions in places considered as flash points.

The PDP ward and state congresses in Kogi State was rancour free as the leaders of the state executive were elected. However, it was not without some drama as the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metu escaped being lynched by the delegates for the state congress over what they termed his partisanship approach.

The delegates were visibly angry with Metu who was also the chairman of the congress when he threatened to cancel the delegates’ election if there was no orderliness.

It became a rowdy situation as delegates threatened fire and brimstone if the National Publicity Secretary should go ahead with his threats. It took the intervention of Governor Idris Wada who the delegates described as a man of peace to calm their tempers before the process was allowed to continue.

The embattled Metu who spoke to newsmen after the election commenced said it was normal in any elective process for people to get angry, adding that the party was resolved to ensure there was free and fair process to bring the party back to its winning ways.

Metuh who lamented the earlier cancellation, said the enthusiasm displayed by members to follow the rules to the later shows that the party has what it takes to win. Governor Wada on his part admonished the people to be peaceful in the conduct adding that it is only one person that will eventually emerged.

In his assessment of the congresses in Anambra State, Mr. Ike Abonyi, who led the five-man Congress Monitoring Committee sent by the National Working Committee (NWC), said the team was very impressed with the elections and commended the party members in the state for their patience, level headedness and cooperation.

He expressed happiness that at the Umuokpu-Awka (Awka South Local Government Area), Ukpo (Dunukofia LGA) Umuofor Hall Nteje (Oyi LGA) where his team went to monitor activities, it was impressive and peaceful.

Abonyi urged anyone who has any complaint to approach the various congress appeal committees set up by the NWC for the different levels, stressing need for members to remain resolute and supportive of the PDP in its new drive to excel again in future electoral challenges.
