PDP’s defeat in C’River, worst humiliation in 24 years, Gershom Bassey laments

Senator Gershom Bassey

Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District in the Senate, Gershom Bassey, has bemoaned the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Bassey, who is also the Cross River caucus chairman in the National Assembly, in a statement made available to newsmen, yesterday, in Calabar said: “Today, I am sad for my party, the PDP in Cross River State. I am particularly sad about our losses in the House of Assembly elections and I sympathise with the good men and women who contested those elections for us.

“PDP’s unbroken run of winning every governorship election since the return of democracy in 1999 is gone. Also gone are over 22 House of Assembly seats.

The PDP has suffered the most spectacular and humiliating rejection by Cross River citizens in its over 24 year history. It is now time for very sober reflection.”

Bassey, who congratulated the APC and its candidates, led by Senator Bassey Edet Otu, on behalf of Southern Senatorial District, said: “The principle of rotation and zoning in Cross River State has been established forever. The matter is now settled.”
