PIND moves to ensure early response to conflicts in N’Delta

To avoid the escalation of conflicts and violence in the Niger Delta region, the foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) has started a process of gathering early information signals on conflicts and early response systems.

The Guardian gathered that the initiative would help security agencies and other organisations strategise to properly manage conflicts, and also build peace in the region, as well as create environments to improve sources of livelihood for residents.

Speaking in Port Harcourt during the training of 90 youths in the state, at the weekend, the Capacity Building Coordinator of PIND, Chukwudi Njoku, said that early gathering of conflict signals would also help the organisation to carry out research, ensure policy formulation and implementation towards peace building.

He said: “The training of 90 young people, including male, female and persons with disability across the nine Niger Delta states on reporting early conflict signals, peace-building processes and practices will contribute to an early response system to conflicts.

“The young people have been trained on different peace building and management modules, including leadership, volunteerism, conflict analysis, conflict management, as well as to identify and report conflict signals to help security agencies on how best they can respond to conflicts early enough before they escalate into violence.”
