Police arrest LG chairman for alleged plan to assassinate Benue speaker

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a Local Government chairman in Benue for his alleged involvement in plan to assassinate the speaker of the state Assembly.


The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed this in a press statement on Monday night while reaffirming the commitment of the Force to prevention of crimes across the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force, through the diligent efforts of its operatives, has successfully apprehended two suspects involved in an alleged assassination plot,” Adejobi said.

“The arrested suspects include a Chairman of one of the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State.”

Adejobi said that preliminary investigations revealed that the Local Government chairman allegedly contracted a militia with the sinister intention of eliminating the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon. Aondona Hycenth Dajoh.


He added that the he operatives of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) swiftly swung into action upon receiving credible intelligence regarding the planned assassination.

According to the spokesperson, both suspects are currently in police custody and are actively co-operating with investigators in the ongoing inquiry.

He assured Nigerians that the Police remains resolute in its commitment to upholding the safety and security of the citizens and public officials.

“The arrested suspects will face the full weight of the law, and the Nigeria Police Force reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order, and prevention of crimes at all levels,” Adejobi said.
