Police arrest suspect over murder of Enugu councillor

The Police in Enugu State, yesterday, confirmed the arrest of a suspect for the murder of Nelson Sylvester Nnacheta, a councillor representing Eha-Ulo Ehalumona ward in Nsukka Local Council of the state.

Although the name of the suspect was not disclosed, spokesperson for the Command, Daniel Ndukwe, said he is in custody.


He said: “Police operatives of the Command have arrested one male suspect and a member of the criminal gang, alleged to have attacked and murdered one Nnacheta, identified as the councillor representing Eha-Ulo Ehalumona Council Ward, on July 16 at Umualoji Village in Ehalumona community of Nsukka Local Council.

“Nnacheta was killed by gunmen on Sunday night at his residence in Eha- Ulo Ehalumona.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an intense discreet investigation and manhunt of the assailants. Further development shall be communicated in due course.”

MEANWHILE, there was growing tension in the community, yesterday, when the mangled remains of the lawmaker was recovered from a neighbouring compound.

Sources said Nnacheta had during the shooting ran from his house to the neighbour where the hoodlums allegedly pursued him to, shot and killed him.

A youth, Ike Ugwu had told The Guardian described the incident as “devastating,” saying the deceased was an asset to the community.
