The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the attack on the US Consulate Convoy in Ogbaru Local Government Area on Tuesday.
The state police commissioner, CP Echeng Echeng, disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference in Awka, the state capital.
According to Echeng, a joint security task force comprised of police tactical teams and troops from the Nigerian Army and Navy raided the suspects’ hideout in the Ogbaru LGA community of Ugwuaneocha.
The commissioner stated that the operatives combed the area and raided a camp used by gunme in the area, but were able to apprehend two people who are now assisting police in their investigation.
He added that the arrested men’s phone conversations were used to track down their contacts, and that the command is gradually narrowing in on the killers.
The victims, who included five male US Embassy officials and four armed police escorts from Lagos, were on a mission to assess the impact of erosion in Ogbaru LGA, according to Echeng.
Echeng also revealed the identity of the officials who were involved in the attack.
They include; Jefferson Obayuwane (RTD DSS personnel), Sunday Prince Ubong, Ekene Nweke, Hassan Etila, Avwuvie Kaye Monday, Bukar A. Kabuiki (Police), Emmanuel Lukpata (Police), Friday Morgan -(Police) and Adamu Andrew (Police).
The commissioner stated that seven people were murdered during the attack, including three consulate officials and four mobile police escorts, while two other consulate officials have yet to be found, and that the deceased’s remains had all been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.
According to Echeng, the state police command and other security agencies are working with the state government around the clock to locate and rescue the missing officials.
“In this regard, I call on members of the public who can provide information about the identities and locations of the culprits to kindly assist the police with such information timeously.” he added.
