The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fire outbreak at the Akere motor spare parts market, Tolu, and Olodi Apapa in the state.

The fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning destroying shops and properties worth several millions of naira.

The state police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Wednesday disclosed that a 65-year-old security guard lost his life in the fire outbreak.

“The fire which started at about 0300hrs was put out by a combined team of officers from the Tolu Police Division and the Lagos State Fire Service. Sadly, a 65-year-old security guard lost his life in the incident,” Hundeyin said.

Hundeyin stated that the state commissioner of police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has urged Lagosians to remain calm as the State Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to take over the investigation towards unravelling the true circumstances surrounding the attack.”

The policeman, however, urged Lagosians to remain calm and also calls for restraints in giving any form of extraneous coloration to the incident.

Hundeyin added that the outcome of the investigation will be made public.
