Police nab notorious car thief in Rivers


Operatives of Rivers State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old man, Meshark Monday, for alleged car theft. Spokesperson for the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the development, yesterday, said the suspect, an indigene of Ogoni, was arrested on May 2, at midnight at the Olu Obasanjo axis of Diobu, Port Harcourt.


Noting that the arrest was a significant breakthrough, Iringe-Koko said the suspect is currently in custody and is being questioned to uncover more information about his alleged criminal activities.

She explained that the suspect, who was driving a Toyota Corolla along Olu Obasanjo, suspiciously manoeuvred the police on a road block, stating that his action caught officers’ attention as he attempted to evade them near the Government Reserved Area (GRA) junction. She said after a high-speed chase onto Aba road, he was successfully apprehended.

She said: “Meshark Monday, a 27-year-old native of Ogoni, was apprehended by crack operatives of the Olusegun Obasanjo Division on May 2, at about 12:45 a.m., driving a Toyota Corolla along Olu Obasanjo road.


” Monday’s suspicious manoeuvres caught officers’ attention as he attempted to evade them near the G.R.A junction. After a high-speed chase alongAbah road, he was successfully apprehended.

“During interrogation, it was revealed that the suspect was a security officer at Geepap Mobile Company.

“Despite working there for two years, he concealed his driving skills. He admitted succumbing to temptation when hunger struck at midnight, stealing a customer’s car parked for maintenance to sell and improve his life.” Iringe-Koko noted that an investigation is ongoing to apprehend Monday’s accomplices in the car theft ring.

Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu has urged individuals to install security cameras and alarms to prevent such incidents outside working hours.
