Police raid black spots, arrest 307 suspects in Abuja


Operative of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested 307 suspects during a raid of ‘black spots’, a term used to describe dens of suspected kidnappers and criminals.


The Sunday night operation was led by the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, at Gidan Dambe in the Dei-Dei-Zuba axis. Parading the suspects, yesterday, Igweh said: “During a search, one English pistol with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from one Ibrahim Tukur, who claimed to be a personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS).

“Other exhibits such as motorcycles, wraps of marijuana, illicit substances and valuables, reasonably suspected to have been stolen from innocent residents, were equally recovered.”

The commissioner said the suspects are still undergoing screening. He informed the public of Operation Velvet, which was launched on February 10, comprising all tactical teams of the command, to curb vehicular criminality and other crimes in the FCT.

Igweh cautioned officers against extortion and urged the adoption of professionalism in the discharge of their lawful duties. Stressing that the security of the populace remains his utmost priority, he urged residents to report suspicious activities through dedicated emergency police lines.
