Police rescue abducted cement worker, intensify search for others

Edo State Police Command, in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, yesterday, rescued one of the abducted Dangote Cement workers, simply identified as Omoba.


Some gunmen had, on Monday, laid an ambush and kidnapped an unspecified number of Dangote Cement workers who had been travelling in a Coaster bus, along Okpella road, Etsako East Local Council of Edo State.

The workers were returning to Okpella town from the factory after the day’s work when the assailants struck and took them into the bush

The command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, in a statement, said the police, upon receiving the news, mobilised vigilantes and hunters into the forest for a vigorous bush combing operation to rescue the victims unhurt and arrest the kidnappers.

He said in the process, one Omoba, whose other names are unknown, was rescued with bullet injuries on his back, having been shot by the attackers.

The victim, he said, was immediately rushed to Halimatu Musa Hospital for medical attention.

Nwabuzor added that another victim who was shot at the time of the kidnap and yet another identified as Victor Okon, were rushed to the same hospital for treatment.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Funsho Adegboye, has given a marching order to the Okpella police, vigilantes and hunters to intensify the bush combing exercise and ensure a speedy rescue of the remaining victims, and arrest the kidnappers.

“The CP gave the directive during his visit to Dangote Cement Factory, Okpella, and Halimatu Musa Hospital, where the injured victims were taken for treatment.”
