Urges Sanwo-Olu to prioritise public interest

Former governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Lagos State, Funso Doherty, has lamented the mismanagement of the state’s vast resources, stating that it has resulted in a missed opportunity for growth and development.

Doherty, who spoke exclusively with The Guardian, yesterday, likened the situation to the parable of the talents, where Lagos, given 10 talents, only returned with two instead of 10.

He attributed the central challenge in Lagos State to governance, specifically the principal-agent problem, where those in power prioritise vested interests over the permanent interests of the people.

According to Doherty, this has led to ou]tcomes that benefit a select few, rather than the majority.

He said that if Lagos State resources were well-managed, the state would be far ahead of where it is today.

Doherty stressed that improving governance in Lagos State could have a life-changing impact not just for the state but also for Nigeria as a whole.

He noted that Lagos had played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s history, saying that addressing the governance challenges in the state is essential to creating a better future for Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged the state government to re-evaluate its priorities and work towards effective governance that benefits all citizens.

“The governor has a significant amount of time left in office. However, holding this position comes with immense responsibility and opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of millions of people in the city.

“I believe that the governor should act as a principal and not as an agent by making decisions that will benefit the people rather than serving personal or external interests.”

“Successive administrations in Lagos State have struggled because they have acted as agents rather than principals, with the exception of the first governor who set a strong foundation.

“As someone who has spent almost six years in office, I urge the current governor to use his remaining time to make a meaningful difference. Lagos has tremendous resources and a rich history as a commercial capital and thriving city. I implore the governor to use his office as a principal, making decisions that will benefit the people and leave a lasting legacy,” he said.
