President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the new service chiefs in Abuja.
At the closed-door meeting were Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo and Chief of Air Staff, Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Olafayo Amao.
Briefing newsmen after the parley, Irabor restated their resolve to the security of life and property.
“We have just seen (met) Mr. President and we are mindful of the demands. We can only at this stage pledge our ultimate best to bring security to life and property across the country,” he stated.
The CDS said the service chiefs would synergise for service delivery.
On what Buhari demanded of them, Irabor stated: “The message from the President is that knowing the current security environment, we must do everything possible to add value to the security disposition and be mindful of the high expectations (from Nigerians).”
IN a related development, the Senate, yesterday, urged the President to ensure proper coordination of the armed forces for a successful anti-insurgency war.
The upper legislative chamber made its position known through the chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Ali Ndume, who stated that the counter-terrorism fight in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states was uncoordinated.
He advised that with the appointment of the new service chiefs, the dynamics of the crusade should change.
Ndume expressed hope that the war, if properly executed, should be over in the next six months, adding that the current administration had procured more equipment to prosecute the battle.
The Borno lawmaker said: “So, we are expecting that with this development and being conversant with the insurgency problem in the country, Nigerians by the several calls they have made for change of the service chiefs, have very high expectations from the new ones. But I am confident that this crop of people would be able to address this issue.”
