Fire incident

A block of six flats was gutted by fire on Friday at Progressive Estate, AbuleNla, in Iponri area of Lagos, with property and cash running to hundreds of millions lost to the fire incident.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said that the entire building has been put under red alert, until the result of the integrity test conducted on the building is out.

The Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr OlufemiOke-Osanyintolu, who visited the scene of the fire incident, appealed to residents to prioritise the safety of their lives and property at all times by desisting from storing combustible products at home.

The PS LASEMA, who reiterated the commitment of Governor BabajideSanwo-Olu’s administration to safety, said the building will be pulled to ground zero if it fails the structural integrity test.

Some of the affected residents attributed the fire incident to power surge from one of the flats on the top most floor of the building.

According to them, cooking gas cylinders explosion from the different flats compounded the incident as their roof were blown off and property worth millions of naira were burnt.

They decried the slow response from the federal fire service in the area before the State Emergency Management Agency, came to their rescue.

While narrating how the fire incident occurred, the Chairman of Progressive Estate, Mr. ShamsideenLawal, attributed it to power surge from one of the flats.

Lawal noted that the resident whose house was first affected before other flats almost committed suicide due to the huge loss of cash and property in his apartment.
