Lagos govt begins Epe mixed development, labour city schemes

Lagos State government has commenced construction work on Epe mixed development scheme and Labour City.

The proposed Epe development scheme was conceived and intended to be designed as a site and services scheme, as well as private sector scheme.

General Manager, New Towns Development Authority, Olakunle Aboyeji, a town planner, said the project was necessitated by the fast growth of unauthorised, major contraventions and haphazard developments identified within the area.

Aboyeji during a stakeholders’ meeting on the commencement of the construction of the schemes held at Epe Resort in Epe local council, sought the cooperation of the residents.

The General Manager said the meeting was convened to sensitise and solicit for the cooperation of stakeholders on the commencement of the schemes, address major concerns and explore opportunities for growth.

Aboyeji also explained that the main purpose of the authority is to control the spread of illegal developments to curb the propensity of the proposed schemes to further encroachment, identify features and characteristics that will enhance and aid the seamless physical possession of the land by the state government and also provide infrastructure.

The Project Director, Town Planning Services, Olusola Orebiyi, said the mixed development scheme and Labour city comprise three phases, the first phase consist of eight zones, which cover approximately 7,81hectares ,located between Itoikin road and Epe-Ijebu Ode expressway.

He explained that the gathering is aimed at discussing with the stakeholders and government to provide function infrastructure such as roads, drainage, electricity, water and many more which will be of immense benefits to the populace.

He enjoined all stakeholders to actively participate and bring onboard innovative ideas for the good of all while paving way for a brighter future for the schemes.

The Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Mr Kamal Olowoshago, encouraged the stakeholders to key in into the project and take ownership.

The Chairman House Committee on Land Matters, Hon Olayinka Kazeem, urged stakeholders to align with the development plan, and ensure that the locals are well informed about the project, which create jobs for them.

Speaking, Hon Abiodun Tobun and Hon Slyvester Ogunkelu representing Epe 1 & 11 emphasised on the need to give excise privileges to the locals to enable them feel a sense of belonging. Other dignitaries in attendance at the stakeholders forum agreed that the project is a legacy project, which Epe, Ibeju Lekki and Lagos at large must come together to make it a dream come through.
