Provost seeks more funding for special Colleges of Education

The Provost, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo State, Professor Kamoru Usman, yesterday, called on the Federal Government to convert the college to a University of Special Needs for Education.

Speaking during one of the activities to mark the 17th Convocation of the college,Usman also appealed for more funding for the college, saying: “The reality today is that the Federal Government alone cannot shoulder the burden of providing education that can make the country achieve the SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDG)2030 Goals for education, talk less of the much-needed resources to implement special education teacher training.”

He said: “There is a need for greater commitment, collaboration and partnership from all stakeholders, including the federal, states and local councils, as well as international and multinational organisations,non-governmental organisations(NGOs), philanthropists and indeed, all those who believe in our common humanity under God.”

He said the college needed all the goodwill and support possible to pursue its mandate of bettering the life of people with special needs through education.

“Special Education, as a discipline, has a lot to offer, not only for the children with special needs, but also in the provision of total education through provision of environment that accommodates students with individual differences, disabilities and special needs, services directed towards reducing or eliminating certain anxiety-generating needs of disable children, acting as advocate for those children who either fall out or are squeezed out of the educational mainstream due to inadequate and inappropriate educational provisions among others,” he said.
