Reaction trails suspension of Beta Edu as humanitarian minister

President Bola Tinubu and Betta Edu

.President Tinubu’s anti-corruption message is clear, says foundation

Following suspension of minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu by President Bola Tinubu on financial misappropriation allegations, Founder Akin Fadeyi Foundation, Akin Fadeyi, said the suspension is clear message to Nigerians on his administration’s anti-corruption stance.

Responding to The Guardian’s query on the development, he said Edu’s suspension and expected investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), speaks volumes and is a clear indication everyone will be held accountable for their actions.

“The President might also be sending a message across to all that irrespective of whatever seeds of discord political animosity has generated and provoked along our multi-ethnic and ideological fault lines, he would work hard at changing the narratives through spoken words and matched with action.

“While this does not signal Eldorado yet as there is a lot to be done to assuage citizens’ pangs, it is a step in the right direction. In those days, there might have been so much outcry before the needful is done.
“That’s a clear indication that they would be held responsible for governance and accountable to probity.

Fadeyi said in Betta Edu, “other appointees may have to religiously and diligently study how federal government processes work so as not to commit regrettable errors.

“Until she’s proven guilty, we cannot offer a judgment yet, but she could have been more cautious than to step on this Banana Peel.
Also reacting, security expert and politician, Hassan Saddiq-Arivi, expressed confidence that the move by Mr. President in a strong indicator that his administration’s anti-corruption promise would likely be fulfilled.

According to him, “For me as a person, President Tinubu has fulfilled his promise . He told us that there will be sacred cows and his action means the current government is working because our problem for long has been insincerity of government.

“But with this action taken, the President has earned respect in the eyes of Nigerians. The next course of action is to tackle corruption in the civil service.

He pointed that corruption among civil servants is endemic therefore, ” the second stroke should be on the civil servants especially the Permanent Secretaries and the Directors because most of them are there for selfish interest.

“The current decision made by the President is motivation for me to continue to support him”

On his part, Founder, Africans in Diaspora for Good Legislation, Ameh Ejeh, is of the view that the President has no choice than to suspend minister Edu in order to assuage Nigerians whose mandate he took by force.

He said “the news is also everywhere that the Presidential Elections he won was fraudulent and the subsequent governorship elections. He should suspend the INEC chairman and other state RECs and prosecute them! Then we maybe will have a start!!”
