Reespect returns with “Great Silence”

Reespect“There is so much distance between us/ Let’s close the space let’s let Venus/ Look upon us with love,” the bars roll slowly over the soothing piano chords. With “Great Silence,” Reespect speaks to her intimate lover in this ‘90s-type RnB-Rap melange.

The fast-rising female emcee, born Aisha Hameed, continues to ignite a spark in the Nigerian Hip-Hop community with her emotive lyricism and masterful flows as is represented in her just-released record, “Great Silence.”

It is quite interesting to see rappers exploit more matters of the heart, as Reespect dived into. The old norm of these lyrical juggernauts focusing on vague puns and ego-fanning lyricism is fast fading away from the Nigerian music scene, as more emcees now sway towards poetic and relatable songwriting.

The Jaybleakz-produced song is the official lead single to her forthcoming EP scheduled for release later this year. The EP is expected to explore alien ideas as part of her musical journey, which fits in nicely with her NFT world “Planet Lukukul.”

In a chat with Guardian, Reespect explained that she wrote “Great Silence,” to depict where she has been in her musical career, while doubling as an expression of despair of having an impossible relationship.

Reespect first discovered her love for rap shortly after she finished secondary school, in 2013. She began writing her own lyrics and nurturing herself, drawing inspiration from a variety of global heavyweights including Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Eminem, among others.

Her professional name, Reespect, was hewn from the nickname given to her due to her elegant respectful behaviour towards her school seniors.

“Great Silence” is available across all streaming services.
