Releasing skits without NFVCB classification an offence —FG

The federal government has declared that releasing skits, films, or music videos without the classification of the National Films and Videos Censors Board (NFVCB) is an offence.

According to the NFVCB, movie classification, which includes age ratings and content advice, assists families in making informed viewing choices and protecting children from inappropriate content.

In May, the NFVCB announced its intention to start classifying audio-visual content such as skits and music videos. The board’s executive director, Shaibu Husseini, stressed the necessity of enhancing video content classification in Nigeria.

The NFVCB is working on establishing a “world-class classification centre” and has warned content creators against releasing unclassified materials.

Husseini stated that the board is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute violators.

“It is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any film or video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification,” Husseini said.

“The board is working with relevant security agencies to track the individuals and production companies involved, and will ensure they face the full wrath of the law.”

The NFVCB also condemned the promotion and distribution of same-sex content on social media, reiterating that public exhibition of same-sex relationships is illegal in Nigeria.

The NFVCB issues certificates of censorship for all films and video works reviewed by its committee. Classification symbols and ratings include “G” for general exhibition, “PG” for parental guidance, and “C” for children-specific content.

Additional ratings are “12,” “12A,” “15,” and “18” for mature audiences.
