National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), has donated relief items to community of Persons with Disabilities, (PWDs), who suffered recent fire disaster in Karonmajiji, Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Abuja,
Donating the item, Director General, NEMA, Zubaida Umar, said the support became necessary to ease current economic hardship of the victims.
She said “The intervention is specifically targeted at persons with disabilities that suffered fire outbreak which destroyed their homes, degraded their livelihoods and subjected them to hardships.
“Persons with disabilities do not deserve just pity; what they deserve is support to trigger and activate their latent capacities. As the saying goes behind every disability there are tremendous abilities.”
Umar called on all stakeholders and NEMA partners to support the agency in its disaster management task even as the rainy seasons sets in.
“In this regards, as the rainy season fast approaches, we count on you once again to downscale the 2024 NEMA flood disaster early warning alerts to all communities at risk to mitigate the impacts of floods, droughts and associated hazards across Nigeria,” she urges
She assured that the agency will continue to support the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, (NCPWD), to better the welfare of its members affected by one form of disaster of another.
Umar however, warned that the relief items are not for sale in no circumstance should they be sold but must be distributed to victims of the fire disaster
Among items given to the community were 1, 984 bags of rice, 183 pieces of foam mattress, 183 pieces of 6 yards wax print textile, 183 pieces of blankets, 183 guinea brocade, (five yards each), 183 pieces of children’s clothing and 183 pieces of women’s clothing.
Others are 183 pieces of men’s clothing, 183 pieces of plastic buckets, plates, cups and spoons.
