The House of Representatives has waded into the hike in the price of a litre of the premium motor spirit (PMS) across the country.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion under matters of urgent national importance at the House plenary session presided by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Benjamin Kalu.

As a result, the House summoned the Group chief executive officer of the Nigerian national petroleum corporation (NNPC), Mr Mele Kyari and the operatives of the independent marketers in the country.

The development is coming against the backdrop of the increase of PMS often referred to as petrol from N539 to N617 per litre due to the removal of the fuel subsidy policy.

Sponsor of the motion, Mr Ikenga Ugochinyere decried the incessant increment of fuel price since it would worsen the plight of Nigerians.

He particularly referred to the increase in the cost of transport fares and food items as some of the biting effects of the increase in the price of fuel in the country.

The Deputy Speaker described the motion as timely since it was reflective of the feelings of Nigerians.

“If we remain silent on issues like this, it would look as if we are insensitive to the plight of Nigerians,” he noted.

Nevertheless, Kalu acknowledged that the latest increment in the price of fuel must have been preempted by market forces.

Amobi Ogah (Abia: LP) who claimed he is an expert in the oil and gas sector also spoke in the same vein adding there is the need to take cognisance of market forces determining the price of fuel In the country.

The House thereby resolved to constitute an Adhoc committee whose membership would be drawn from across the 36 states of the Federation to probe into the issue accordingly.
