There have been reactions to fresh threats to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara by 26 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Pro-Wike lawmakers, at the weekend, said they would not hesitate to impeach Fubara as the last resort for alleged continuous breach of critical provisions of the Constitution.

They noted that the stoppage of the earlier impeachment move against the governor was sequel to the peace agreement with President Bola Tinubu, but alleged that following that, the state had now been conducted outside the laws of the state and the Constitution.

Recall that Wike and Fubara had been in a festering political crisis since October 30, 2023, when the lawmakers attempted impeachment of the governor, which failed.

Pro-Wike lawmakers, led by the  Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, began to make fresh impeachment threats following a recent statement by the state’s People Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential Campaign Committee Council and other notable citizens of the state, which blamed Wike for the growing crisis in the state, and called on President Tinubu to caution him (Wike).

But reacting to the impeachment threat yesterday, a resident, Odikamme Udokamna, urged the lawmakers not to take Fubara’s patience and that of Rivers people for granted by attempting to plunge the state into another turmoil through their “legislative rascality”.

He said, “It is on record that this band of opportunists are unhappy with  Siminalayi Fubara’s stoic statecraft in effectively managing the affairs of the state pragmatically, in the face of a flurry of unprovoked and unwarranted attacks, purposely designed to distract him from focusing on the discharge of his enormous responsibilities as the state chief executive.

“It is bizarre to learn from these folks that their understanding of legislative functions is to make laws that ostensibly suit their whims and caprices, and not the ones that will accelerate the growth, development and progress of Rivers State and her people”.

In his reaction, a political analyst, Oounabo Inko-Tariah, and former Senior Special Assistant on Media to former Governor Nyesom Wike, said that it was unfortunate that since the peace brokered by President Tinubu, the Assembly had jettisoned every sense of reasoning and collaboration required of them.

He lamented that rather than show some sense of rapprochement and commitment to peace like the governor, they tended towards becoming political traducers bent on rocking the ship of progress.

Inko-Tariah said: “Their grandstanding has become completely nauseating not just to democratic ethos, but to Rivers people who are solidly behind Governor Siminalayi Fubara by their organic support.”

He said the lawmakers were enjoying peace in the state because of the respect for peace by Fubara, unlike his predecessor, Wike.
