Rider injured, passenger dies as bus rams motorcycle in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), yesterday, said a commercial motorcyclist was seriously injured while his passenger died, following a road crash along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos.

Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said the accident happened when a reckless commercial Volkswagen bus (EKY 558 YG) driver rammed the motorcycle at Bolade Intersection, inward Oshodi.

According to him, the passenger died instantly while the trapped motorcyclist was rescued from under the commercial bus by LASTMA officials.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the bus driver, who was on a top speed after beating a traffic light, drove recklessly and rammed into the motorcycle.

“LASTMA Durojaiye Musefiu ‘Bravo’ (Zone 20 P. W. D), who was on a traffic monitoring patrol with his team around Oshodi axis, confirmed that the accident could have been averted if the commercial Volkswagen bus driver had obeyed the traffic light regulating vehicular movement at Bolade Intersection.

“He confirmed that, while the passenger (male) on the commercial motorcycle died instantly, the trapped rider had serious injuries and was rescued from under the bus by LASTMA officials.

“Durojaiye stated that while the dead passenger and the rescued rider were moved away by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, the driver of the commercial bus was handed over to policemen from Akinpelu Police Division,” Taofiq said.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Bakare-Oki Olalekan, who visited the scene warned commercial bus drivers against overspeeding.

He also appealed to motorcyclists to stop plying bridges and highways, including restricted routes across the state.
