Rivers councils inaugurate committee on flood prevention, disaster management

The Chairman of Ogba /Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State, Vincent Job, has constituted a 15-member Committee to manage the flooding challenges in the six geopolitical zones of the Council.


One LGA in Orashi region of Rivers State is surrounded by a lot of rivers, creeks and rain forests lying on flood plain.

The 2012 and 2022 flood in the area sacked over 40 communities and destroyed homes and properties respectively.

The inauguration of the flood Committee is coming three weeks after The Guardian Newspaper reports which underscored the State low in preparation of flood ahead of the Nigerian Meterogical Agency (NIMET) predictions of heavier floods this year.

Inaugurating the Committee yesterday, Job said the move followed the increasing rainfall as well as the predictions and warning by NIMET.

The Council Boss charged the Committee members to identify flood-prone areas of the Local Government, demonstrate commitment through proactive provision of camps and other logistics, ensure zero casualty amongst victims and liaise with companies operating in the area to give intervention to affected persons.

He said, considering the nature of area, proactive measures were needed to minimize hardship associated with natural disasters.

He called on the Federal Government to look into the issue of flooding with a lasting solution to the problem.

Similarly, the Local Government Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area of the State, Chidi Lloyd, has inaugurated a 17-man Emergency Committee on flooding.

The Committee is mandated to identify flash points, sensitize residents and work out modalities to cushion the effects on residents.
