The Rivers State Caucus at the House of Representatives has expressed strong disapproval of a statement allegedly issued by Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, the member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, calling for disciplinary action against Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, the Coordinator of the G-60 Lawmakers in the Green Chamber, over his stance on contentious political issues.

In a statement signed by Rep. Awaji-Inombek D. Abiante, PhD, the Caucus Leader, the group emphasised that while every individual is entitled to their opinion, Hon. Dekor’s position is self-serving and does not reflect the collective view of the Rivers State Caucus. It was pointed out that Dekor has never been elected to speak on behalf of the Caucus.

“Leadership within the Rivers State Caucus in the House of Representatives and the National Assembly is determined by seniority,” Rep. Abiante stated. “Hon. Dekor, being a second-term lawmaker, cannot assume the position of Caucus Leader amidst colleagues with three and four terms in office.”

The Caucus clarified that Dekor’s election history undermines his claim to leadership. After losing his seat in 2015 due to a Court of Appeal decision, Dekor returned to the House in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023 for a second term. This record, the statement noted, disqualifies him from vying for the leadership of the Rivers State Caucus.

“We urge the public to disregard Hon. Dekor’s comments as the outburst of an individual without proper authority,” Rep. Abiante continued. “The National Assembly operates under structured regulations, not village council rules, allowing every member to contribute based on their convictions. Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga has demonstrated commendable quality representation, earning respect from well-meaning Nigerians.”
