Rivers: Police kill six suspected robbers, arrest six, rescue two kidnap victims

Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested six suspected armed robbers terrorising the East-West Road-Emohua axis. Six others were neutralised at Obelle Town, also in Emohua Local Council of the state.


The Commissioner of Police, CP Emeka Nwonyi, in a press briefing, yesterday, said operatives of anti-cultism and tactical units stormed the hideout of a gang led by one Uchechukwu Daniel and on sighting the police, the hoodlums opened fire.

Nwonyi disclosed that the police responded and in the gun-duel and six of the hoodlums were neutralized while six were arrested. Others ran with bullet wounds in different directions.

He explained: “Sequel to the criminal activities at the East-West Road axis of Emohua Local Council of the state, operatives attached to the anti-cultism unit, in conjunction with a tactical team, invaded a hideout of one Uchechukwu Daniel aka “Horn man” at Obele community in Emohua.

On sighting the operatives, they opened fire on them. The rapid response from the police neutralised and dislodged them, as they scampered for safety and bowed to the superior fire. Six of them were killed and six arrested.” He added that the arrested six suspects were helping the detectives in the investigation.

Also, the Police Commissioner explained that on Friday, June 30, 2023, police operatives on patrol along King Perekule Junction GRA, Port Harcourt, intercepted and rescued a kidnap victim. The victim narrated how one of their friends was kidnapped and taken away. He said empty shell and iPhone were recovered.


Similarly, Nwonyi noted that on Thursday, while acting on credible information, operatives trailed kidnappers to their hideout, and rescued two victims unhurt at Ozuoha in IKwerre Local Council while one Mr. Buchi David suspect was arrested. He listed exhibits recovered from the arrested suspect including one locally fabricated arm, cut-to-size guns, and six cartridges.

However, reeling out the achievements of the command in the past week, the Police Commissioner stated that the command recovered one pistol, a bag, and a techno phone.

“On June 20, Special Area Division at Rumudomaya and the local vigilance group raided a criminal hideout.

“At slaughter behind Rumuokoro Market, three force uniforms, Army cap, locally fabricated pistol, and live cartridges were recovered when the combined team of policemen and vigilance group stormed the hideout.

“Operatives of Anti-cultism Unit, Bori annex on July 5, while on patrol at Yokuru in Khana Local Council, arrested one Baridara Baridam aka Ojukwu, who has been on the wanted list of Police.

“The suspect is a member of a three-man gang, including one aka Mali and Lekia terrorising Ogoni axis of the East-West Road. Exhibits recovered from the suspect to include two AK 47 riffles,” he explained.
