Rotary builds centre to empower youths

To curb the high rate of crime and unemployment among youths in the country, the immediate past District Governor of Rotary International, District 9110, Mrs. Omotunde Lawson, has built a block of two classrooms and a gate to accommodate the influx of students at the Rotary Vocational Centre, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Speaking during the commissioning of the project, on Friday, Lawson regretted the high rate of youth unemployment, adding that there was need for more vocational centres in the country to curb unemployment.

She said: “This project is so important. We are all aware that there is no job anywhere. If you are waiting for one organisation to employ our youths, we will wait in vain. You can own your own business and even help others to own theirs, if you toe the line of vocational training.  We can improve the economic power of people and multiply it when there is a project like this.”

“When we launched the girls’ empowerment initiative in September last year, our focus was to train the youths. My focus was to train 300, but guess what? We were able to train 257, both in Lagos and Ogun states. We empowered not less than 110 with start-up tools in addition N100,000 each. We also gave some of them laptops.

She recalled that the last time that they visited the centre, they found some students sitting outside the classrooms so that also was another reason why they decided to build two more classrooms for them so that instead of sitting outside or using the main hall as a classroom they will make use of the new classrooms.

Member of Rotary Club (Gbagada), Adeyemi Lawal  revealed that the projects were funded by corporate bodies that “believe in Rotary and Rotary Club District 9110.
