A Russian woman was reportedly kidnapped while traveling through Mexico’s northeast, the Russian embassy said Saturday, citing local media reports.

“According to the information the Embassy has, she traveled in a vehicle from Monterrey to the city of Reynosa, accompanied by her Mexican acquaintances,” the embassy said in a statement released on its account on social media platform X.

“The Russian embassy in Mexico is in contact with local police authorities, as well as with the husband of the kidnapped Russian woman,” it said.

Reynosa is in Tamaulipas state, which borders the United States, and is one of the states hardest hit by violence linked to organized crime such as drug trafficking and kidnapping.

The state is also a busy route for undocumented migrants attempting to cross into the United States.

Four US citizens, two of whom later died, were snatched at gunpoint after crossing the border into Tamaulipas in a minivan in March last year.
