Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, has blamed former President Muhammadu Buhari for the country’s economic woes in the country, alleging that the former military ruler destroyed the economy before vacating office as elected President last year.

Buhari, as a Major General, took over the Federal Government on December 31, 1983, and was overthrown by Gen Ibrahim Babangida in August 1985. He came back in 2015 as democratically-elected President under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and left in May last year, after serving out his eight years. He handed it over to his party leader, Bola Tinubu.

Sani pointed out that the foundation of the inflation and hardship Nigerians are facing under the present government of President Tinubu was laid before the exit of Buhari from office.

However, he charged Tinubu to find a way of resetting the country’s economy to reduce the hardship faced by the people.

The civil rights activist posted on his Facebook page, yesterday: “Nigeria’s economy was basically, institutionally and fundamentally destroyed by the Buhari regime. He (Buhari) led Nigeria for eight years and ruined it.

“The nation was plundered and ravaged by elements within the circle and corridors of his government.”

Urging Nigerians to reminisce on the disastrous economic policies of Buhari and the activities of his cronies in the corridors of power, Sani noted that the outcome of Buhari’s bad governance and poor management of the country’s economy was what the citizens are facing today.

He said: “What the nation is going through today is a direct result of his disastrous policies and leadership. If he (Buhari) had done the right thing, we wouldn’t have been where we are now.

“Where were you when the treasury was looted and the national debt piled up? He should not be shielded from blame. The subsidy and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cartels are the forces now up against the country,”

The activist remarked that Tinubu should find a better way of redirecting the economy from total collapse, urging him to immediately retrace his steps from the misdirected and poor economic policies of Buhari that ruined the economy.

Sani continued: “Tinubu has a responsibility to reset the country from the Buhari’s doctrine of waste and failure. It is too early to forget where we are coming from. The government must intensify efforts to ease the suffering of the masses.”
