Loyola University honours Olukanni as commencement luncheon speaker


Renowned media personality, filmmaker, and alumna of Loyola University Chicago, United States, Bolanle Olukanni, took the centrestage as the Commencement Luncheon Speaker for the Fall 2024 Graduation of the School of Communication, which held last December, at the institution’s Water Tower Campus.

Olukanni, a graduate of the University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Communication Studies, has made significant strides in media and advocacy since her time at the university. She has gained widespread recognition for her work as a TV host, documentary filmmaker, and advocate for women’s empowerment through her non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Nigeria.

In her heartfelt speech to the graduating class, Olukanni shared insights on navigating the complexities of the media landscape and the importance of using communication as a tool for social impact. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the role her education at Loyola played in shaping her career and values.

“I graduated from Loyola with a dual degree in Communication Studies and International Studies, and I am deeply thankful for it. As you plan, and prepare for life beyond university, I ask that you consider the need for your voice in the world. A voice filled with knowledge, kindness, honesty, and thoughtfulness,” she said to the students.”

Her return to Loyola was marked by a sense of nostalgia and reflection as she walked the campus that once nurtured her aspirations. She described the experience as emotional and deeply fulfilling, calling it a perfect way to close out an impactful year.
